Almost и nearly соответствуют русским почти, около, едва не, чуть не, еле-еле и употребляются, когда речь идет о том, что поддается измерению, или о положении и движении во времени и пространстве. Оба наречия часто образуют обороты с all, every, always: nearly/almost all почти все; nearly/almost every (always) почти каждый (всегда). (3.) Когда речь идет об абстрактных понятиях или о том, что не поддается измерению, употребляется только almost: almost alone, almost dark, almost forgotten. Nearly в этих случаях не употребляется.
